An Occasion | Olivia Creps
I recall a time when I was a couple of years younger. It was soon after my friends all began driving. One of my friends at the time called me and invited me to go watch a movie with her. Being from a small town without a theatre we decided to head north towards the bigger cities. We were cruising along when my friend exclaimed, “Oh look how cute! Up there in the truck in front of us! It’s three old ladies going somewhere together.” I located the truck that she was referring to and chuckled at how cute it really was. We continued to watch these ladies as we drew closer and closer. Then suddenly I realized that these three ladies were my grandmother and her two sisters. So, naturally as we passed I waved. My friend and I got a good laugh about how ironic it was that I actually knew who these ladies were.
After pondering on this event a little bit, I realize just how important family relationships are. Ever since I was a young girl I can recall family-get-togethers. Most of these gatherings were just my mother’s family; her parents, sisters and brothers, and their young children. But we would frequently see those extended-extended family members also. Reunions are always a blast because we get to see these people that don’t come to our family-get-togethers, but they are still very important people in our lives. I have relationships with each.
It takes a lot for sisters to pile into a small pick-up truck, especially while they are young. Sometimes it is amazing at how family relationships change as the siblings move out and follow their life goals. They must realize just how nice it is to have someone who is close enough that they can talk to without being judged (too quickly anyway). I am the oldest child in our family and I have never experienced losing a sibling because I was the one who disappeared. But I do have a younger brother and I find it hilarious that every time I visit or call he likes to be there and wants to hang out. Before I left he would ignore me royally- that’s why it is so funny. It's also very funny to know that those three ladies are so different one wouldn't think they could every get along. One happens to be ornery and bossy, the other permissive, and the final one a comedian.
But these family members are also great for the tribulations that we have in life. Recently, I lost my great grandmother. This is the mother of my grandmother that my friend and I saw with her sisters. Although I didn’t get the opportunity to be there with the family, the stories about this gathering are wonderful. Only one of the sisters could not make it to be with her family soon after the death because she lives so far away, but she arrived as soon as she could get away from her home. My grandma’s brother made it also, so the family was gathered quickly. Because of the closeness of our extended family we all gathered fairly quickly and were able to commemorate my great grandmother’s life together. It is just amazing to see how these relationships help support people as they go through difficult situations.
Thinking over a small experience such as seeing my grandma traveling with her sisters truly does make me think of the importance of my family relationships. There are times in my life that I need someone that will be able to hold my hand- whether sad or happy. Plus, I am needed in the same way, so I feel obligated to make my family relationships strong; strong enough that forty years from now I can get into a small truck and cruise down the road with my little brother.
