Stranger Than Wal-Mart

Locket | Sara Staheli

My neighbors had the craziest backyard grass.
I played with their litters of kittens
And jumped on their rusty trampoline -
Jumped so high, I was sure I could land
On the roof of their house and sleep there if I wanted.
But then, when I was jumping one time,
I got too wild and tumbled off the edge.
And when I fell, I lost a locket my dad gave me.
It was gold and had a mirror inside so I'd know
I was most important.
I never found the locket, and I never jumped again.
So now, instead of kittens, trampolines, and grass,
I buy my own hangers,
Watch grown-up movies,
And eat things that are fortified.
